Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I give this book 5 out of 5 stars. This book is very simple and easy for children to go along with. It is entertaining as the largest lizard goes on to look for the lizards that will put on the show. The book has rhymes in it as well, which allows the children to have a bit of fun while reading, and makes it sound very pleasing, which in turn garners their attention, while still teaching math.

Classroom Ideas
1) Since this story is focused on counting by 5’s and 10’s it is important for the children to completely understand the concept. During a read-aloud the children could have cubes made of 5 and 10 pieces and as the story is read they can continue to add on by 5’s and 10’s until the end of the story. Then they an count them all once more to make sure that there are 50 in total.

2) The children can also make their own story while counting by 10s. They can create a mini book and use art such as collages to have more fun while still learning math as they will need to present counting up to a certain number, whether it be 50 or 100 by counting 10s. This will also allow them to be creative while learning this concept.

  1. Hi Gina,

I enjoyed reading your blog. The story book that you chose is both suitable and engaging for 1st graders. The rhymes are catchy which will make it easier for the children to follow. The classroom idea you have about using cubes pieces made of 5 and 10 pieces is a great idea. Kids like doing hands on activities so following the story with the cubes for them will be fun. It will help them to connect with the story and the concept of counting by 5s and 10s and not feel like its a chore for them. Great blog :)
