together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by
using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to
represent the problem.

Summary:
Charnan Simon’s One Happy Classroom takes the reader through a school day of a
Kindergarten classroom. This classroom is described as one happy classroom as
students participate and learn during the day. The students go to lunch, play
outside, take a nap and return to their final assignments of the day. Interestingly,
each page gives a description of the student’s activities, while teaching
students to add from the number one to ten: “
Rating:
I would give Simon’s One Happy Classroom a five star rating.
This book teaches young readers to not only read and make connections about
their school day but to count from one to ten and then counting down from ten
to one. Students can also add the amount of people and objects in the picture
which can be turned into a full class lesson.
Classroom Ideas:
1. Students
can use this book when learning how to count from one to ten. Most first
graders already know how to count but the teacher can use this as a counting
review lesson up to ten.
2 As
a way to help students understand addition, the teacher can use the pictures to
create an addition number sentence as well as a subtraction number sentence. As
an example there are 6 students who have to use the bathroom. Two students get
off the line and go to the bathroom. How many students are left on line?
3.Teachers
can create addition and subtraction word problems using the pictures. For an
example there are 5 students who participate in show and tell. There are 11
students who sit down and watch. How many students are in the class all
together?
4.The
class can participate in a fun game where they complete the addition or
subtraction number sentence by filling in the missing number such as
4
+ =6 or -7=2
