Summary: One was Johnny is a story about a character named Johnny that lives alone. One day he didn’t get to be alone in his home because he received company. He was no longer one person in his home but two, then three, then, four, then five, then six, then 7, then 8, then 9, and lastly 10. As all 10 interruptions came into Johnny’s home he became very upset. He then said he was going to count backwards and that as he did he expected all of the characters in his house to leave by the time he finished. He did as so and ended up having the his home to himself and went back to being One Johnny in his home.
Rating: Overall, I will rate this book a 5 because I think is an entertaining book for early learners to learn how to count. This book is great because it helps the student not oly how to count forward but also how to count backwards. I also really enjoyed reading it and thought both the story and visual representations were funny as I read the book.
Classroom Ideas:

I think this book can help children how to count up to Ten as well as help them learn how to count backwards. It can also help the students learn which numbers are higher than others and which numbers are lower than others. This is a great book for teaching addition and subtraction in a classroom. You can also have students play with the numbers 1-10 and add or subtract. For example: a lion, cat and mouse came in to johnny’s home so now there are 4 people in the house. Or, the tiger left now there are 8 people in the house. Overall, this is a great book to use to teach early learners how to add and subtract from 0-10 and also to compare which number is higher than the other or less than the other.

  1. Hello Nayary,

This is a great book to help those students have a better sense of counting up and down. Many children have a hard time counting without skipping numbers, so this book will definitely help them.

  2. Hey so we had similar books where we are counting 10s which is really great! I think there could have been another activity that was more artistic, or had movement so that the children could use their energy for it! I love the ideas you already have but having something with a bit more movement I think is best for lower grades. Great work!
