Mathematically proficient students can apply the mathematics they know to solve problems arising in everyday life, society, and the workplace. In early grades, this might be as simple as writing an addition equation to describe a situation.

Summary: This book is about Pete the Cat wearing his new coat that has four colorful buttons. As he goes on about his day, Pete sings about how much he loves his four groovy buttons. However, after every time he sings the song, he loses one button. He continues to sing until all his buttons are gone. When he has lost his last button, Pete the Cat sings about how he loves his groovy belly button!

Rating: 5/5 stars. This is a great book because it makes the subtraction easy and in a context that is relatable to the children. As well, Pete the Cat mentions that he does not cry about losing each button. This is apart from the math but it is a great message for young children that sometimes we lose things but it’s okay! Always find the positive! (in Pete’s case it’s his belly button!)

Classroom Ideas:
This book would be great when introducing subtraction to students in Kindergarten or first grade. A good idea would be to have a cut out of Pete the Cat with his coat on and four velcro buttons. That way, as you read the story you can take off one button to visually show the children the math. That same cut out could be used as a center at a later time.

    Your book looks very eye catching. I think your idea of using buttons and a coat is an excellent idea. It is a creative hands on activity where students can learn math. I also really like the message it sends to students to keep on going. You shouldn't quit as soon as you encounter some trouble, keep on going and find the solution!

    I really like you lesson idea. Children enjoy learning by using a hands on activity. Your activity would help them understand subtraction easier. I also like the underline message of the book, to look at the brighter side of things and not to get frustrated so fast.
